I Was Aware of the Dream World and the Physical World at Once
When we’re dreaming, we live in the dream world, with no knowledge of the real world. We may forget what stage of life we’re in and dream of being in college when we’re 40. In that dream, we have no knowledge of the real world.
Conversely, when we’re awake, we’re conscious of the real world and can’t participate in a dream.
What if you could experience both at once?
I once had a fascinating dream exploration just as I was falling asleep. A dream began, and I was aware of the dream world, of events unfolding in the dream. At the same time, I was aware of where I was in the physical world, which room I was sleeping in (the hall), which side of the mattress my head was towards, what was to my left (sofa), and what was to my right (computer table). I was aware my eyes were closed. I did not feel the need to open them, since the room was dark and there was no light to see with. Besides, I was aware of everything in the room, so there was no need to see anything. I was following the events of the dream world and the real world in parallel, at the same time, like watching TV while talking to someone: you’re aware of what’s happening in the TV program as well as the real-life conversation, and you can follow both over time.
Both the dream world and the physical world felt real, unlike when we’re fully awake, at which time dreams feel fake. If, right now, you tell yourself you’re taking a train, and getting off at a village, and start farming, your brain tells you it’s make-believe and it doesn’t have the impact as it would if you’d experienced the same events in a dream. So, when we’re aware of the real world, dreams feel fake. By contrast, in my experience, both the worlds felt equally vibrant and believable, as if I was living two lives at once.
After a short while, the real world faded away, and I smoothly transitioned into the dream world and became immersed in it, much like a David Lynch masterpiece.
