Sleep Exploration: I Could Observe Myself Waking Up
When we wake up, we’re aware of it only after the fact: “Oh, I’ve woken up”. We can’t consciously observe the process of waking up.
But, on one occasion, I was able to:
First, became aware that I woke up, that the night has passed, it’s morning, I’m in my bedroom, and that I’m next to the window.
Second, my hearing returned, as if someone plugged in a cable connecting a microphone to a computer: I could hear sounds of my mom moving around and doing things. But I still could not speak nor move nor open my eyes. In the dream world, our body is paralysed for our own safety: otherwise we’d act out our dreams, running, jumping, falling, etc. When we wake up, the body is reconnected to our brain. It normally happens the instant we’re conscious, but here, the reconnection was delayed by a second or two, providing me a fascinating glimpse into how my body worked.
Third, all these abilities returned — I could open my eyes, speak and move. I had fully woken up.
It was as if a laptop is booting up and things start working one by one: first, the screen and internal keyboard, then the external monitor and keyboard, then the Internet, then apps. On this occasion, I was able to once observe the boot-up process of my body, and it was fascinating.
